ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

History is the “Journey into the past” and a record of past events. The term History stems from the Greek work “Historia” meaning “Inquiry”. Herodotus is known as the Father of History.
The Department of History at Vanita Maha Vidyalaya was started in the year 1962, has evolved a concerted approach, focussing on comprehensive study of History. The department offers courses leading to Bachelor’s Degree in Arts (B.A.) with the combinations of History, Political Science and Public Administration (HPP), History, Economics and Political Science (HEPS), and History, Economics and Public Administration (HEPA) with the medium of instruction as English. The curriculum is designed to provide the understanding of both History of India and the World.
Mrs. Zebunnisa Rahman from Madras University joined the department in 1962 and remained as the Head of the Department till 1994. She left a profound impression on the students and the staff of the college. She introduced a Gold Medal to the meritorious student of History every year for Intermediate and Under Graduate batches.

AIMS IN DEGREE PROGRAMMES IN HISTORY

  • To impart knowledge and skills to the students to understand and comprehend the origin and  development of cultural heritage of the nations and the stages of evolution of the mankind.

  • The course also aims at introducing the students to the developments from the times civilizations during the prehistoric times to the present advanced societies of the world.

  • To develop in students the skills of enquiry, investigation and analysis of the society they live in and their place within.

  • To provide for students and develop the responsibility and valuable information preparing them towards the opportunities in this rapidly changing world.

  • The course also offers students an opportunity to pursue Civil Services in their further endeavours of careers, giving them special classes as a part of the Institutional Social Responsibility.
