Sarojini Naidu Vanita Maha Vidyalaya

Sarojini Naidu Vanita Maha Vidyalaya, started as a tiny tutorial college, known as UWCA (University Women’s Cultural Association) college in 1957 and was handed over in 1961 to the Osmania Graduates’ Association (OGA).

It was renamed as Vanita Maha Vidyalaya and was affiliated to Osmania University with PUC in 1962. In 1964 affiliation was obtained for UG courses in Arts and Science and the college adopted the Motto “ Vidya Vinayena Shobhate” (Humility adds Lustre to Education).

In 1969 the noted freedom fighter – Khan Abdul Gaffer Khan popularly known as ‘Frontier Gandhi’ laid the foundation stone for the main building of the college.

To consolidate its Mission to empower women through education and a tribute to the Poet, Orator, Freedom Fighter, Bharata Kokila ‘Sarojini Naidu’, the college was renamed as Sarojini Naidu Vanita Maha Vidyalaya in 1971. The founding and naming of the college is therefore, marked by a stately ambience that is all pervasive and ever present.

In 1972 Intermediate Courses in Science and Arts in both English and Telugu media were started and in 1973 B.Com commenced.

In 1988 in commemoration of the Silver Jubilee of the Institution, P.G courses in English and Commerce were started. In 1991, M.Sc. in Botany and Zoology were started. In 1995 MBA was introduced. M.Sc. Organic Chemistry and Physics commenced in 2001 and 2007 respectively.

Apart from the conventional courses in B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com., over a period of time, Self-financed courses in Microbiology, Computer Science, Electronics, Biochemistry and Nutrition in B.Sc., and B.Com. Computers were introduced.

At Intermediate level, Vocational courses in Computer Science and Engineering, Accounting and Taxation and Medical Lab Technician were also introduced.

The college with the Vision of ‘Training Women for a Challenging Future through Value Based Education’ adopted ‘Educate, Empower & Liberate as its Mission. With its Vision, Mission and Motto, the college marched ahead towards assessment and accredition.

In 2005, the institution was assessed and accredited for the first time by NAAC and was awarded B⁺⁺ Grade. The 2^nd NAAC cycle was a feather in the cap as the institution secured ‘A’ grade in the year 2012. The year 2012 was also  memorable as it was the Golden Jubilee year celebrating the 50 years of remarkable journey setting milestones. The institution has secured ‘B’ grade in its 3^rd cycle in 2018.

In 2018 MEC group was introduced in Intermediate, in 2020, BBA and in 2021 M.Sc., Nutrition and Dietetics were introduced.

The year 2022-23 brought in another milestone in the history of ‘Vanita’ with the celebration of Diamond Jubilee celebration.

Over the years the college has evolved from a meagre 36 students to its present stature with a strength of 3500 students.

Apart from academics, the college has extra-curricular activities.

Sports and Games were introduced right since inception. The Department of Physical Education has been the training ground for hundreds of national and international sports persons over the years.  NCC was introduced since 1965 with 50 cadets. NSS with its Motto ‘Not Me But You’ was introduced in 1976 as an inspiration towards community service. In the Year 1993 Sangeet Vanita was initiated to impart classical and semi classical Vocal and instrumental music to the students. The Placement Cell was established in 2007 towards fulfilment of our mission to empower and liberate our students in all aspects so that they are ready to face the challenging future with confidence. During the Golden Jubilee year, the college established ‘NIPUNI’ – The Skill Development Centre, for enhancing the skills of the students by imparting Add On courses and certificate courses in different skills. Vanita Clubs like commerce club, Eco Club, Zoo club, were initiated in 2017 catering to different interests of students by way of conducting activities. To enhance the confidence among the students and to freely express their opinions on important and  varied issues like education, employment, laws, marriage, rights etc., Vanita Open Forum was established in 2020 which conducts issue based discussions, debates and deliberations once a month. In the year 2021 Vanita’s Got Talent was started to tap the latent talent of students in different fields in their 1^st Year of Intermediate, UG and PG courses so as to showcase, nurture and venture out possibilities of Innovations towards self-sustaining entrepreneurial development.

Sarojini Naidu Vanita Maha Vidyalaya provides facilities and opportunities for an all-round development of the students.
