Learning one language is not enough: (Importance of the Language)

In today’s world, speaking one foreign language is not enough. Students who speak several languages will increase their chances of finding a job, whether at home or abroad. Learning another language enriches the mind and opens up new horizons, both personal and professional. More than 300 million people speak French on the five continents. The OIF, an international organisation of French-speaking countries, comprises 88 member States and governments. French is the second most widely learned foreign language after English, and the fifth most widely spoken language in the world. The International Organization of Francophonie has 51 member states and governments. Of these, 28 countries have French as an official language.

FRENCH DEPARTMENT AT THE COLLEGE

In our institution, this is the first contact of students with the French language. The teaching of French is therefore aimed at both beginners and adults, for whom French is the third or the fourth language. The teaching of French is focused on two areas: written and spoken skills and the communicative approach is adopted. To create and retain the student’s interest in the language, it is necessary to work  with the authentic documents that will enhance their knowledge of the language, culture, civilization and/or French literature. Taking into account all the circumstances mentioned above, we have to adapt the curriculum proposed by the university and the guide the students to use this foreign language which is one of the richest of modern languages. In the classroom, we provide the students with the necessary linguistic tools that will help them to work individually or in a group. First, they need authentic documents that will link the language with the current situation of the world (France and French speaking countries) which will help them to improve their communication and the audio or visual aids will help them to improve their pronunciation and their accent. In addition to initiating them to this new language, the department strives very hard to create, develop and sustain the interest of the students in the language by giving them necessary guidance for their future course of action.

It is heartening to note that every year at least three to four students pursue French even after completing their degree and today some of the students of Vanita have taken up jobs as translators in the corporate industry and some of them have even taken up the profession of teaching and have now made a mark in their own fields.
